Keeping your will up to date
If you want to change a will, you can either revoke (cancel) the old will and make a new one or add a codicil to the original will.
A codicil is a supplement to a will which makes an alteration but leaves the rest of the will intact. This might be useful, for example, to increase or add a cash legacy or leave a specific item to someone.
A codicil must be signed by the person who made the will and witnessed in the same way. The witnesses do not have to be the same as for the original will but again they cannot be beneficiaries of the codicil or married to a beneficiary.
There is no limit on the number of codicils that can be added to a will, but they are only suitable for simple changes. If you have a number of changes to make, we advise that you consult a solicitor for advice on making a new will.
Never try to make written changes on an already signed and witnessed will. Any alterations on the face of a will do not form part of the original, legally valid, will.
It is advisable to review your will every few years, and certainly after any major changes in your life – such as remarrying or losing a partner, having a child or grandchild or any changes to the value of your estate e.g. significant changes in house prices.
If you would like to add the Macular Disease Society to your existing Will, a Codicil Form can be downloaded on the right of this section. Otherwise please call us on 01264 321965 or email julie@maculardisease.org for a copy.
